Putting People With Learning Disabilities First

In 1983 a group of parents and carers of children and adults with learning disabilities got together in Aberdeen to investigate the possibility of developing a caring and homely respite care service as no organization offered such a service.

After three years of hard work developing and refining the idea in consultation with statutory and other voluntary sector bodies Archway was formed.

In 1990 our first permanent care home for nine residents was opened followed soon after by a six bedded respite unit.

Such has been the success of our services we opened another respite unit at Dyce in and yet another one in the Garthdee area of Aberdeen in. Our most exciting new facility combining shared and independent living within a purpose built flatted complex in the city centre opened in 2006.

Archway now supports in the region of 200 children and adults with learning disabilities through its respite, shared and permanent care services. While over seventy members of staff provide care services we remain user led to ensure we can respond to changing needs and develop innovative new services to meet them.
